When does something become usual? A good question because I have just received another scholarship from Apple to attend this years WWDC in June (06/11 - 06/15) in San Francisco. Maybe I will get the chance to introduce myself personally with Apple? Well, I am looking forward what the answer of Apple will be within the next weeks. San Francisco here I come!

Apple is calling

Yesterday I've got an e-mail from Apple where they say that they have read my resumé and that they want to arrange a phone interview with me. Wow, that's something I am really happy about however I am not sure what the purpose of this interview is. Job? Internship? I guess I should ask about that up-front.

The interview is scheduled for tomorrow evening and someone from the Localization & Release Engineering department will call me. To prepare for my first telephone interview ever, I have an appointment with my assurance consultant today. He has also specialized on job applications and I hope he can give some valuable tips. So, keep your fingers crossed.

Long time no see

I have to admit that I haven't posted on this blog for a long time now. Actually I was really busy since Christmas and had hardly time to even blog to my main blog. Since I have started writing my diploma thesis, time is very rare. I had two exams left where one of them I passed last week successfully. Today I hit one major milestone while implementing my thesis task. So, I am making continuous progress on finishing my studies.

I am done! Just a few moments ago I finished my bachelor thesis with my presentation. Final result: 2. This is a good result in Germany.

The presentation went well. The attendees honored my good presentation style and slides. My supervisor was happy, that I have addressed the issues he claimed in his expertise for my written part. That was worth the nightshifts and all the stress of the last weeks. Head on for the diploma!

Achieving the unachievable

Today at 11am was the day of the days: I have finished writing my bachelor thesis and filed it at our examination office. Within the next weeks I have to give a talk presenting my thesis and after that I am eligible for the title bachelor of science in computer science

The last week was full of nightshifts to finish my implementation of an architectural neutral page table interface for the Fiasco micro-kernel. Yesterday afternoon the kernel booted successfully for the first time on the qemu emulator. That doesn't mean that it will also work on real hardware. So it took me another few hours to fix that.

By 4:30am this morning I gave the finishing touches to my thesis, went to bed for 2 hours and printed the whole thing during breakfast.

Now I am happy that it is over.

On friday evening Apple has published the website containing all the posters presented at WWDC 2006 scientific development poster session. Podcasts are supposed to be published in the near future.

we had to say two days ago to our beloved sandwich maker. Not because it wasn't working anymore, but because it was taken away by an inmate moving out. It turned out that this machine wasn't part of the kitchen's equipment, as thought by everybody, but it belongs to that inmate.

Within the last two month the sandwich maker was becoming a very handy and essential tool to prepare our meal. That's why on monday not only one was reacting like "Uh, where is the sandwich maker? It's gone? Damn!".

Fears that we'll have to starve from now on didn't came true, but preparing meal without waiting for a free slot on the sandwich maker isn't the same. We all hope that it will be honored and used in its new home like in our Comarch flat share.

I have just finished uploading a small selection out of my about 700 pictures taken in San Francisco. Enjoy them until I have finished updating my San Francisco website.

Today I have got a new taks for the remaining 2 1/2 weeks of my internship. On Friday I will present some open source trouble ticketing systems to the staff group. The last two weeks I will spend on implementing a proof-of-concept study of an interface standard for fault management software.

Back to Cracow

Since yesterday I am back in Cracow. Since then I had to answer my mails from last week but it were two relatively quite days as today is a national holiday in Poland.

The return trip from San Francisco was everything else but relaxed. In London there was still pure chaos and the employees were overstrained. This in turn reflected in unpolite answers and behavior. Why four days after they have busted the terrorists they still had no signs in place for transiting passengers only London airport knows.

Hiking

On the last weekend we took a trip down into the Beskid mountains. After a four hour journey with the train we arrived in Piwniczna. From there we were hinking 20km to Szczawnica. Large parts of the path take course on the Polish-Slovakian border. In between we had the possibility to eat blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. We found accomodation in a small hostel in Szczawnica.

On sunday we had a short trip into the neighbor village crossing a famous viewpoint from where you could see the Tatra mountains. To get back to Krakow we took the bus, which managed to return within 2 1/2 hours.

I have uploaded quite a few pictures to Flickr but I will also put some of them onto my Krakow-page later.

If I was reading the news right, it is not only an extraordinary summer in Poland. In England they negotiate topless, in the US they set the state of emergency, in Germany they are expecting another record summer (after 2003). And here? We are melting more or less in our bureau with temperatures constantly over 30 degree. Our side of the building (south-east) has no airconditioning. We have gotten some fans a few weeks ago, but they only mix the already warm air.

Yesterday I was thinking about buying me such a small children pool and put it under my desk and put my feet in it to cool them. But I haven't put this plan into reality yet. So, what are you doing to cope with the heat?

As posted (in german) earlier I am going to attend this years Worldwide Developers Conference of Apple Computers in San Francisco. In contrast to my last year attendance, I will provide a small contribution to the conference: a poster

This year Apple is hosting a "Scientific Development" poster session for the first time. Until last friday one could submit a short abstract to be reviewed by a jury. My abstract was accepted :-). Now I will present a poster about my work on the SIS1100 Driver project.
